So much can happen in five years, the possibilities are endless. I often get overwhelmed with dreams and plans I have for the future, which leads to procrastination and ends in me binge watching all the Netflix instead of working towards a goal.

Having a five-year plan gives motivation to follow trough and take control, it helps to create focus on your priorities and makes it easier to say no to things that won’t bring you closer to your goals.

But sitting down and actually making a plan for the next five years can be daunting, which is why I collected a few tips to make it a bit easier for you – let’s go.


1. Categories

To start off, identify your categories and brainstorm plans and goals that you feel passionate about. Try to be as specific as you can, who will you be with in five years time, where will you live, what will you do. Here are the categories I used to set up my plan:

  • Personal Goals
    This category can be very different for every body. Ask yourself how you see yourself living in five years.
  • Financial Goals
    It can be annoying to think about this, but it is so important. Be sure to be realistic, really look at your financial situation and pinpoint what you want to achieve. Only with a plan can you be sure to reach the financial goals you might have.
  • Career Goals
    Before you can make a career plan that suits you, it is important, that you think about what you truly enjoy doing. What is it that makes you happy? Can you monetize it in any way? Who do you aspire to be like? Research them and ways on how to turn your passion into an income.
  • Fun/ Travel Goals
    Do you want to see a specific country or continent? Do you want to travel the world or do anything else for fun? Bungee jumping, Rock climbing…?
  • Relationship Goals
    This can tie in closely with your personal goals, but try to focus on the people in your life and what you want out of those relationships. Use this category to look at what you can do to improve the relationships in your life.
  • Personal Development
    Never stop learning. It doesn’t matter if you already finished university years ago or are still in the middle of it, make sure to plan which areas you want to improve and how.


2. Prioritize

As you do with any good list, or plan, now is the time to prioritize, identify your most important goals in each category.


3. Action

Now you want to break your top goals in every category down into actionable steps. Every bigger goal you might have, won’t happen over night. For me, this is probably the most important step, to make sure I don’t get impatient. To have a list of steps that seem manageable can really help you reach those longterm goals you set for yourself.


Now you just have to make sure, that you don’t put too much pressure on yourself, things change, plans change, things happen. Don’t beat yourself up, if something doesn’t work out like planned. Your five-year plan can give you a sense of focus and direction, it should take pressure of you by showing you the small steps you can take towards your goals every day.
